Taylor´s first novel in the Destroyermen series, titled "Into the Storm", introduced the crew of the old "four-stacker" destroyer the USS Walker. It takes the readers out of the frying pan (the South Pacific front of WWII) and into the fire (an alternate universe with an even more deadly threat than the Japanese). Before you even make it to book two you are drawn into the story and come to think of the crew as real people experiencing the impossible.
