The State of Michigan is suing Gary Harper for AFDC payments made to a woman named Dorothy Hoose. She had a son in 1988 and named Harper as the dad. There´s just one problem, though; he´s not.
But the State of Michigan isn´t interested in technicalities like who the actual father is. It´s known for many years that Harper is not the dad and, as far as I can tell, lifted nary a finger to find out who is.

One of the central themes of Catholic Social Teaching is a call to family, community, and participation. It is the foundation for any work for peace and justice and it is everywhere. The prophets railed about it. Jesus preached it. Paul´s letters are filled with it. It runs through church literature in papal encyclicals, the catechism, and episcopal documents. Go to the web site for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and you will be inundated with it. Today it is under assault from of all places inside the church, particularly that last bit, participation.

Ahmadiyas in particular are at very vulnerable situation in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh, while Bahais are regularly persecuted in Iran. Hindus in Bangladesh are possibly at the worst ever situation since past few decades, especially after the creation of Muslim Pakistan in 1947. Pakistan was born under the header of being a Muslim nation, where it almost openly ignored the rights of religious minorities, and Hindus were regularly denied minimal citizen rights. Over the years, I have read scores of cases in which a father was deprived of his parental rights through that simple expedient. Not once in all that time has there been a case that recognized the "inherent, equitable rights" of fathers." Not once in all that time have I read a case that recognized the simple principle that rights cannot be lost without some action on the part of the individual whose rights they are.
