As many people have discovered, finding a "quick fix" to losing weight is generally too good to be true. Losing weight, and sustaining this weight loss, takes a mental and physical commitment. However, a new technology may offer a way to expedite this weight loss without requiring the use of any supplements or medication. This technology is called Cyclic Variations in Altitude Conditioning, or CVAC and is being utilized and a handful of weight loss clinics in the Midwest.

CVAC is a patented process that simulates changes in altitude and promotes the body´s natural adaptation response. Scientists have stated that a 20 minute session can be equivalent to a person running up and down a mountain 300 times. Once inside the dome-covered pod, the atmosphere inside is slowly thinned to increasingly high levels of altitude, and then cycled back to ground level, again and again. While sitting comfortably in the CVAC pod, a person can watch TV, talk on the phone, listen to music, or read a book all while undergoing hundreds of changes in altitude.

The manufacturer of CVAC believes it trains your body to burn calories more efficiently by increasing the number of oxygen-rich red blood cells in your body. This correlates to a scientific study conducted at Hawaii University, where the CVAC pod was shown to increase the oxygen carrying capacity of cells. Further, a recent study published in Nature Magazine (February 2010) has shown significant link between living in high altitudes and losing weight.

In addition to the altitude-related positive effects on weight loss caused by CVAC, it has also been studied at Stanford University to help reverse insulin resistance. Insulin resistance, which is a leading cause of stubborn fat and "hard-to-lose" weight, develops when the body´s cells become less and less sensitive to a given amount of insulin and can generally occur as one gets older or has a history of an improper diet. It is also a precursor to diabetes.

Complete Clinics, a group of medically supervised wellness and weight loss clinics in Chicago, Illinois, has been tracking data on the positive correlation between CVAC and weight loss. Patients have reported significant positive changes in internal metabolic factors such as cholesterol and triglycerides that tend to be associated with weight gain, as well as physical weight reductions. These patients generally join the Complete Clinics 6-month weight loss program, and are advised to use CVAC at some point during their 6-month program, generally during the "fat burning" phase of the program. Average fat loss in the Complete Clinics program has been 12 pounds of primary fat in just the first month.

Though the link between CVAC and weight loss is only starting to emerge at this point, the science behind the process certainly makes a compelling argument.
