MAYOR NEWSOM KICKS OFF SAN FRANCISCO WEEK AT THE SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO
As Shanghai´s Sister City, San Francisco was asked to participate in the World Expo 2010. San Francisco was named as an "official city participant" in 2009, the only City in the United States to receive this designation. As an official participant, San Francisco has been given the use of a special "city space" in the "Urban Best Practices Building."
"San Francisco is honored to have the special privilege of being the only U.S. city with a display at the World Expo, and to be recognized as a leader in Green, Sustainable policies and programs in the United States," said Mayor Newsom. "We are pleased to showcase some of the best of San Francisco and the Bay Area to our friends in China. I believe this exhibit will continue to build a special friendship and cooperation between our two cities."
The San Francisco Exhibit is comprised of various "showcases" and "green pillars" (displays on pillars in the building), that highlight green innovation in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Additionally, there is a major display on the new San Francisco Bay Bridge, a project which is being designed and formulated in San Francisco, and built by ZPMC in Shanghai.
In addition to strengthening ties between the two Pacific Rim financial and business capitals, "San Francisco Week" will introduce some of the City's cultural icons to a new audience. Performing throughout the week will be the internationally-acclaimed Chanticleer choral group, the iconic Glide Ensemble, The Children's Peace Choice from Northern Light School, the Murphy Irish Dancers, dancers from the Pacific Islander Youth Alliance from San Francisco's Samoan Community Development Center and musicians from the world-renowned San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Participating members of the San Francisco Delegation also included Mayor Willie Brown, Mayor Frank Jordan, Assessor Phil Ting, Sister City Chair James Fang, and Ms. Weili Dai of Marvell.
